International audienceThis study deals with the effects of the loading history on the lifetime of 304L stainless steel (TH or CLI) in air at room température. In addition to reference tests (tension-compression) performed using "regular" cycles without any overloads until failure, fatigue-overloads tests composed of different steps applied to the same specimen have also been carried out. The results point out cyclic softening of the material, additional hardening of some virgin specimens and strong lifetime dependance on monotonous or cyclic prestraining of the material. Prestraining effects seems beneficial under stress controlled conditions but deleterious under strain controlled conditions. The tests results are analyzed in order to eval...
