In 2005, the French Ministry of Environnment started a procedure to inscribe into the World Heritage list of UNESCO 18 French caves wellknown for their speleothems. Among them, the touristic cave of Choranche is famous for its soda-straws. Each heritage inscribed into the UNESCO list must be protected by its State. That is why the French government decided to protect Choranche caves through the law relating to "natural sites and monuments " dating back to 1930. EDYTEM Laboratory has been choosen to achieve the study needed, to survey and assess the heritage, to delimit the protected area and to propose a management guideline for the site, with concerting of local people and land managers.
