Since 1885 and the creation of Banff Hot Spring Reservation, economic development in the Canadian Rockies has dramatically increased thanks to tourism. Transportation infrastructures have been directly connected to tourist activities within the mountain parks, which have been spaces of attraction for more than a century. This paper, by analyzing the way transportation developed tourism activities and increased both economic and heritage values, seeks to understand how transportation also became one of the key issues of debate : how to reconcile the management of transcontinental traffic and environmental protection ?
