Some samples obtained from tropical soil clay separate were studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The most part of iron is precipitated as oxides or hydroxides on the surface of the clay minerals. Nevertheless, kaolinite contains a fraction of lattice iron, substituting aluminium in the octahedral sites. After chemical treatments in order to extract iron, Mössbauer spectra show that oxides and hydroxides are the most easily extractable ; but it can remain a part of them and, on the other hand, the kaolinite lattice itself can be damaged. Finally, after heat treatment of the sample, Mössbauer spectra give direct information about the dehydration of kaolinite at 585° C and the rearrangement to form mullite at 980° C.Des échantillons extraits de ...
