The α-form of lanthanum fluoro-selenide (LaSeF) crystallyzes in the hexagonal system, with the space group P6₃/mmc. The cell parameters are a = 4.217 Å and c = 8.188 Å with two formula units per unit cell. A monocrystal was used for the study of the crystal structure. The determination of the atomic positions was refined by the least squares method, and the ultimate reliability factor (R) was 0.065. The structure is formed by alternating layers of selenium anions and planes of lanthanum and fluorine ions (each La and F ion occupies the center of an equilateral triangle formed by the other ions).
