In the first place we examine the first problem indicated by the title : the identity of the individual or of the citizen, in Europe in particular. We treat more in detail the post-modern criticism of the notion of identity, a criticism which itself derives from the modem and Cartesian concept of the subject. The evolution of the relationship between the modem individual and modem politics has culminated in the problem, derived from late modernity, of the requirement of political recognition of differences of identity.
