Les habits anciens du philosophe. Poésie, philosophie et art d’écrire

This article explores the role and meaning of the «quarrel between philosophy and poetry» in the thought of Leo Strauss. To begin with, it shows how, right from the start, the quarrel played a key role in Strauss’s rediscovery of pre-modem philosophy and its art of writing between the lines. Furthermore, it investigates how, as his understanding of the subject deepened, Strauss came to wonder whether the quarrel really is a quarrel. As he came to see it, ancient philosophy is indebted to ancient poetry in its very foundations, both as to its form and to its content. The poets, so it appears, taught the philosophers not only how to write but also how to think.Cet exposé s’interroge sur le statut de la «querelle entre la philosophie et la poésie» dans la pensée de Leo Strauss. La première partie montre comment, dès le début, cette querelle a joué un rôle clef dans la redécouverte straussienne de «l’art d’écrire» de la philosophie prémodeme. Puis, la deuxième partie cherche à dépister comment, au fur et à mesure que s’approfondît sa compréhension de la matière, Strauss en venait de plus en plus à se demander s’il s’agit effectivement d’une querelle. Comme il finit par le voir, la philosophie ancienne est redevable à la poésie jusque dans ses fondements mêmes, quant à la forme aussi bien que quant au contenu.
