This article explores the role and meaning of the «quarrel between philosophy and poetry» in the thought of Leo Strauss. To begin with, it shows how, right from the start, the quarrel played a key role in Strauss’s rediscovery of pre-modem philosophy and its art of writing between the lines. Furthermore, it investigates how, as his understanding of the subject deepened, Strauss came to wonder whether the quarrel really is a quarrel. As he came to see it, ancient philosophy is indebted to ancient poetry in its very foundations, both as to its form and to its content.
