This apparently stoichiometric compound belongs to a solid solution series, the limits of which are Sc₁.₈Er₃.₂S₇ and Sc₂.₁Er₂.₉S₇. It has the same crystal structure as Y₅S₇, and the its cell parameters are : a = 12.29 Å ; b = 3.741 Å ; c = 11.26 Å and β = 104.9°. The powder pattern of the compound is given as for the other ternary sulfides of the same type, the two metals have a disordered arrangement on the octahedral sites.
