A ‘ new’ approach of Merovingian numismatics is advocated. Bringing together all known specimens in a database is a conditio sine qua non for more in-depth studies on groups of mints in a larger area. This enables contextualising products of mints or moneyers in the national phase of Merovingian coinage (and may also be the way to tackle the problem of the pseudo-imperial series). Combining die-studies with data on gold content are most promising for establishing more detailed chronologies and re-constructing the rythm of emissions, whilst for gaining a reliable idea on their size it is necessary to strive for ‘ completeness’.
