Single crystals and powdered samples of vivianite Fe3(PO4)2.8H2O have been investigated using infrared spectroscopy. A detailed theoretical study enables the identification of the main vibrational modes related to the water molecules. The polarized infrared reflectivity of a cleavage plate of vivianite has been studied for various orientations. Knowledge of the electrical dipole positions, leads to the assignment of the observed bands : ν3(WI)=3125 cm-1 ; ν',(WII)=3260 cm-1 ; ν'3(WII)=3475 cm-1 ; ν2=1620 cm-1 in agreement with the site symmetry method expectations. It is thus possible to correlate these spectra with the infrared absorption data obtained for powdered samples of vivianites in various stages of oxidation. Static and dynamical ...
