The theory of prototypes is a kind of referential semantics based on instanciation which aims at breaking away from the system of categories as well as from necessary and sufficient conditions ; yet it remains bound to those whenever the prototype has a name or an attribute that is a noun class. Then, the prototype comes very close to the generic definitions of language dictionaries, which give prototypical subcategories, sometimes even several, in the case of superordinates. The lexical anaphora, which corresponds to a predication of true inclusion, and whose function is designation, draws the line between the attribute as a quality and the attribute as a category.
