Studies of clay mineral distribution and diagenetic patterns in Athabasca Group red beds and in alteration haloes associated with unconformity-type uranium ore deposits, have established intimate relationships between red bed diagenesis, host rock alteration, mineralization and basin evolution. Primary mineralization took place during an advanced stage of basin evolution under conditions of deep burial and high-grade diagenesis with temperatures in the order of 200 °C. Three episodes of mineralization, remobilization and host rock alteration are recognized which correlate with distinct stages of prograde and retrograde diagenesis and with episodes of tectonic reactivation of the basin.
