Śrīvijaya Revisited: Reflections on State Formation of a Southeast Asian Thalassocracy

In a previous article, processes of early state formation of the epigraphically well-documented late seventh century Kadātuan Śrīvijaya have been analysed. The present one attempts to continue this study in the following five centuries on the basis of Chinese and Arab reports in view of the strange lack of any indigenous sources in Sumatra. A main concern is to define Śrīvijaya’s amorphous statehood as a thalassocracy. It dominated a confederation of semi autonomous harbour cities in maritime Southeast Asia and controlled temporarily the transoceanic trade in its central Strait of Malacca. Particularly revealing is Śrīvijaya’s unique “ritual policy” in its relation with the dominant powers of South and Southeast Asia and with China. Special attention in this regard is paid to inscriptions at Ligor on the Malay Peninsula and of king Adityavarman in Sumatra.Les processus de première formation de l’État du Kadātuan Śrīvijaya, bien documentés par l’épigraphie du VIIe siècle, ont été analysés dans un précédent article. Cet essai prolonge cette étude durant les cinq siècles suivants, sur la seule base de sources chinoises et arabes, en raison de l’absence inhabituelle de toute source indigène à Sumatra. Il tente de définir la structure amorphe de Śrīvijaya comme celle d’une thalassocratie qui dominait une confédération de cités portuaires semi-autonomes en Asie du Sud-Est insulaire et contrôlait temporairement le commerce transocéanique passant dans le détroit central de Malacca. La « politique rituelle » de Śrīvijaya est particulièrement révélatrice pour les relations qu’elle établit avec les puissances dominantes de l’Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est, comme avec la Chine. Une attention particulière est consacrée à l’inscription de Ligor, sur la péninsule Malaise, et au souverain Adityavarman à Sumatra.Kulke Hermann.
