A museal practice now over, the exchange of collection objects as an acquisition means was however a process linked to a specific era in the history of Museums from the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Through examples collected during our researches, we reveal the different aspects that characterise that practice, its historical implication and what set it apart from the other current means of acquisition of museum collections.
