The objects of the various collections that contribute to a museum's reputation have to be pointed at, removed from the batch, documented, technically or symbolically scrutinized by experts, published or exhibited at the largest scale to become a local or regional at least and sometimes national or worldwide reference. The examples considered here are from the history of the Neuchâtel Museum of Ethnography (MEN) and contribute to show that technical or symbolic appraisals do not grow on trees and do not take on a sacred feature but that they are the fruits of long, sometimes skilful and tortuous social constructions.Les objets des diverses collections contribuant à la réputation d'un musée doivent être pointés du doigt, extraits du lot, doc...
