It has been suggested that cave bears had a vegetarian diet. They inhabited the deepest recesses of European caves during the Pleistocene, where rarely other animals reach willingly. However, cave bear skeletons appear in most cases dismembered and scattered, and the bones are ravaged by carnivores. Complete skele¬ tons are the exception, even in sites where no other signs of the presence of carnivores are noted. In order to asses a possible scavenging behavior in cave bears, we set to analyze patterns of bone breakage, tooth puncture types and locations, as well as puncture size in one brown bear cave, three cave bear-only caves and in a fourth cave bear cave were hyenas and wolves were also recorded.
