Le gisement pléistocène supérieur de la grotte de Jaurens à Nespouls, Corrèze, France : les Cervidae (Mammalia, Artiodactyla)

Jaurens Cave yielded three Cervid species, Cervus elaphus, Capreolus capreolus and Rangifer tarandus, and we compared their postcranial skeleton with all the homologous pieces of fossil and recent adult specimens of the same species we were able to find. The Reindeer with 1199 remains is the most numerous Cervid, and the third macromammal species of the site. It is biometrically similar to the specimens previously known from the Upper Pleistocene of South-Western France, and shows very few differences with the recent ones. The Red Deer is uncommon with 124 remains only. The specimens of Jaurens are very large, as already known during the Upper Pleistocene. The Roe Deer is rare with 19 remains ; the Jaurens specimens are about 10 % larger than the recent ones. The occurence of the three Cervids leads us to moderate the open landscape general impression given by the presence of the Steppe Bison and the Horse as the two more numerous macromammal species of the site. The palaeoenvironment was under a steppic dominance but with a mosaic of small forested zones, and the temperature was not especially cold. The extreme rarity of antlers among the remains (four only for the Reindeer, none for the Red and Roe Deers) strongly suggests a very short time for the formation of the site, probably early in the spring.Le gisement de la grotte de Jaurens a livré trois espèces de Cervidés, le cerf élaphe Cervus elaphus, le chevreuil Capreolus capreolus et le renne Rangifer tarandus. Nous avons systématiquement comparé leur squelette post-crânien avec celui d'échantillons pléistocènes et actuels des mêmes espèces. Le renne, Cervidé le plus abondant avec 1 199 restes (la troisième espèce de grands mammifères dans le gisement), se révèle très proche biométriquement des rennes du Pléistocène supérieur déjà décrits dans le Sud-Ouest de la France ; il présente très peu de différences avec les représentants actuels de l'espèce. Le cerf est de très grande taille, ce qui correspond bien à un âge pléistocène supérieur. Le chevreuil est environ 10% plus grand que les représentants actuels de l'espèce, confirmant ainsi l'âge du site. Les trois Cervidés concourrent à définir un biotope plutôt steppique entrecoupé de petites zones forestières.Valli Andrea M. F., Guérin Claude.
