Sharing spheres of interaction in the 6th millennium cal. BC: Halaf communities and beyond

This paper approaches possible social interaction between the Levant and Northern Mesopotamia in the 6th millennium cal. BC through an appraisal of the main archaeological evidence dated in this period in these two large geographic areas. The new data, mainly from recent archaeological excavations, have succeeded in identifying technological and economic dynamics in neighbouring archaeological cultures in this period. Thus, the contributions of the new archaeological sequences at the major Late Neolithic sites in Northern Mesopotamia (Sabi Abyad, Chagar Bazar, Tell Halula, Halaf, Domüztepe) have been able to define the social dynamics associated with this culture and determine their influence on sites in the south. Sites of contemporary chronology located in the Central Levant (Tell al-Baharia) have incorporated important new data to this research. The abundant information from the Southern Levant reveals, despite significant elements of diversity, the existence of relations and exchanges between these regions. Finally, it is shown that recent research in Northern Mesopotamia, mainly in Syria, but also in countries such as Jordan and Israel provides a substantial database reflecting the technological, social and economic strategies associated with the Halaf culture and other cultural groups identified as contemporary with it.Cet article analyse les possibles interactions sociales entre le nord de la Mésopotamie et le Levant Sud au 6e millénaire cal. BC, à partir d’une évaluation des principales données archéologiques datées de cette période dans ces deux zones géographiques. Les données issues principalement des dernières fouilles archéologiques ont permis d’identifier les dynamiques technologiques et économiques dans les cultures archéologiques voisines de cette période. Ainsi, les nouvelles séquences archéologiques des principaux sites du Néolithique récent dans le nord de la Mésopotamie (Sabi Abyad, Chagar Bazar, Tell Halula, Halaf, Domüztepe) ont contribué à définir les dynamiques sociales associées aux cultures, en particulier celle de Halaf, et à mesurer leur influence sur des sites méridionaux. Des données importantes ont été récemment fournies par les sites contemporains du Levant central (Tell al-Baharia). La quantité d’informations disponibles pour le Levant révèle, en dépit d’éléments de diversité bien visibles, l’existence de relations et d’échanges entre ces régions. Enfin, l’important corpus de données établi lors des recherches récentes dans le nord de la Mésopotamie, principalement en Syrie, mais aussi dans des pays comme la Jordanie et Israël, reflète les stratégies technologiques et socioéconomiques associées à la culture Halaf et à d’autres groupes culturels contemporains.Gómez Bach Anna, Cruells Walter, Molist Miquel.
