A unified treatment of polytypism in 2:1 and 1:1 layer silicates is described, considering the idealized geometry of the two kinds of anionic single layers (planes) necessary to build up the multi-stored unit structures : oxygens in a hexagonal kagomé pattern corresponding to a lacunar four-pointer triangular net with three filled nodes (symbolized □ T4), and oxygens-plus-hydroxyl, or hydroxyls alone, in a triangular array with three nodes per multiple cell (symbolized ).
