Tungsten minerals scheelite CaWO4 and ferberite FeWO4 (or wolframite (Fe,Mn)WO4) are met in nature in different contexts. They may also form by the alteration of each other. We have studied this type of reaction experimentally, by reacting a solution containing iron or calcium (and the components which are likely to be present in hydrothermal solutions) with scheelite or ferberite crystals. The conditions are 600°C, 108 Pa and the duration of experiments is 72 h. We have reached the following semi-quantitative conclusions : the stability of scheelite is increased by the increase of the Ca/Fe ratio, the amount of CO2-3 or Na+ ions (basicity of pH), whereas F-, SO2-4 (acidity of pH) have an opposite effect.
