A synthetic glass of a basaltic composition was weathered at 90° C, on one hand in freshwater, and on the other hand in sea-water (non stirred and non renewed medium). Then, the alteration surfaces were studied by means of photoelectron spectrometry XPS and SEM. In freshwater, on the glass surface, a clearly stratified multilayer grows, whose outer part and inner part are respectively iron and magnesium rich. For experimentations overlasting a fortnight, the dissolution becomes congruent and leads to the separation of the pellicle superficially formed.
