During the last six years we have studied the crystal structure of vitamin B₁₂ and a number of its derivatives and related compounds, and of one cobalt containing degradation product. Through the calculation of three dimensional Patterson and electron density distributions, we have assigned positions in the crystal structure to many of the atoms and groups known from chemical evidence to exist in the molecule, cobalt, cyano, benziminazole, ribose and phosphate groups. In addition, our evidence suggests positions for the atoms in the chemically unknown part of the molecule ; in particular, it shows that immediately surrounding the cobalt they are arranged in four five membered rings, two of which are directly linked.Hodgkin Dorothy.
