Reactions between sulphide minerals and aqueous solutions containing metallic salts (Ag, Bi, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) were studied experimentally at 100 and 200° C. Three essential reaction types were distinguished : — simple exchange reactions between the metal in the sulphide and that in solution ; — oxido-reduction reactions producing a sulphide higher in metal content than the initial sulphide with the formation of acid in the solution ; — oxido-reduction reactions proceeding in the opposite sense : the action of sulphuric acid leads to a sulphide lower in metal content than the initial sulphide.
