The Fiscus Barbaricus once again : a Note on the History of Sicily in the Fifth Century. The paper re-evaluates the relationship between Sicilian possessores and the fiscus barbaricus, the fund that in the late antiquity supplied the barbarian foederati, mentioned solely in the Papyrus Tjäder 1 (445-446 d. C.). Although the sources do not explicity prove the allocation of foederati in Sicily, it argues, based on Novellae constitutiones imperatorum Valentiniani, IX, that in 440 AD some of them were sent to the island by magister utriusque militiae Sigisvuldus, to protect it from the imminent invasion of the Vandals and that Sicilian possessores provided for their maintenance, until their demobilization following the treaty of 442 between Val...
