In Martinique, where single-parent families account for more than half of family households with children, it is the birth outside of conjugal cohabitation that is the main cause of their occurrence. This particularly high incidence of single parenthood and its earliness in the lives of both mothers and children invites us to question the specificities of family forms in the West Indies, the ways in which families, and more particularly single-parent families, are formed, as well as the parenthood norms in the Caribbean area.
