Daniel Levalet, The cathedral church St-André at Avranches. The excavations carried out from 1972 to 1977 at the site of the early cathedral of St-André d'Avranches have uncovered, beneath the Romanesque church, three structures that go back even earlier : a church with three naves and with a western apse of trapezoidal shape from the middle of the 9th century ; a church from the end of the 4th century that can, with some likelihood, be considered to have been the first cathedral of Avranches ; and finally, a building the exact purpose of which was unclear, though it was quite certainly built at the beginning of the period of the Roman occupation.
