Plasticity of somesthetic representations and perceptive illusions : the phantom limb paradox. The phantom limb phenomenon refers to the illusory sensation that a limb survives amputation. The specificity of normal somatosensory sensations associated with phantoms is preserved as is sometimes the ability to move the missing part of the body. Investigation of this perceptual illusion allows gaining insight into the elaboration, persistence and changes of the body image in relation to their neurobiological substrate.
