Helping the User and Modelling his Skills All human-machine interactive systems embed a type of assistance, that the designer may have chosen deliberately or adopted unconsciously. In particular, a crucial element of the type of assistance is the user model used by the system, implicitly or explicitly. We describe the role of the interlocutor model in two classes of cooperative situations where functional dialogues occur : problem solving situations and knowledge transfer situations. We present an analysis of the processes involved in the modelling of the interlocutor's competence, in two real situations of problem solving dialogues.
