Knowledge-based Systems as Media for Expertise Communication : A Study of Cognitive Ecology. This paper presents an analysis to the reasons why expert systems are the appropriate media to transmit empirical knowledge within organizations. It contains first an introduction to cognitive ecology, the framework for this study, and second a review of two specific cases. The practical relevance of knowledge-based systems is only fully understood when they are compared to other communication and representation media (oral or printed).
