French policy in the Far East during the years between both wars was essentially dominated by the Indo-Chinese issue. Here, more than anywhere else, the consequences of the Great War forced Paris to restrict its ambitions and to confine itself to the strict protection of its economic, financial and territorial interests. Convinced that no policy whould have ever been possible in the Far East without Anglo-Saxon support, France dealt tactfully with Japan and endeavored to remain neutral in the Manchu conflict The extension of the war in China engulfed French possessions in the Far East in the storm. While the French Armed Forces capitulated in Europe, Indochina came under Japanese control.
