Cheikh Ma el Aïnïn ou la dernière résistance saharienne (1831-1910)

At the beginning of this century, the western Sahara was one of the most feared centers of the resistance to the colonial intrusion. Cheikh Ma El Aïnin was the political and religious leader of the nomads who refused to surrender without fighting. He had to confront three European powers in Sahara, in Mauritania and in Morocco. In Mauritania, the Emirates united under the leadership of the one of Bakar, the Moor Napoleon of Tagant, raised the flag of resistance to the colonial invasion. Though they had human means and the courage to fight, they laked material means. In Morocco, the Makhzen, led by two monarchs Mulaye Abdel Hafid and Mulaye Abdel Aziz who did not have the dimension of Mulaye Hassan the 1st, was sinking inexorably into the night of the protectorate. Yet the kingdom had arms and munitions, which had to be given later to Ma El A'inin for the Moor résistants. The Adrar, the last Mauritanian bastion of anti-imperialist resistance, sunk in 1909. The Sahara was under threat. French were at Atar. The king Mulaye Hafid like his predecessor Mulaye Abdel Aziz refused to provide arms to the résistants, he instead signed treaties with the French. It was precisely at that particular moment that Ma El A'inin entered the lists. The diplomatic action which consisted of dressing the colonial powers against each other, especially France and Germany, was no more efficient. At the head of an army, Ma El A'inin decided to destitute the king of Morocco, who in his eyes had betrayed the cause of Islam. But in June 1910, he was pushed back in the valley of Tadla by the French troops led by General Moinier. He came back to Tiznitt where he died on 28th October 1910. His son El Heyba started again the struggle in 1912. He occupied Marrakech before he was driven back and defeated by Colonel Mangin on 6th September 1912. This marked the end of Ma El Aïnin resistance. And the coming of the 1st world war had to relegate the Saharian affairs to the background.Le Sahara Occidental fut au début du XXe siècle le foyer de l’une des résistances les plus redoutables à l’intrusion coloniale. Le chef politique et religieux des nomades sahariens qui ne voulaient pas se soumettre sans combat était Cheikh Ma El Aïnin. Il devait faire face à trois puissances européennes au Sahara, en Mauritanie et au Maroc. En Mauritanie, les Émirats avec à leur tête celui de Bakar, le Napoléon maure du Tagant, lèvent l’étendard de la résistance face à l’invasion coloniale. Ils ont les moyens humains et le courage de faire la guerre. Ils n’en ont cependant pas les moyens matériels. Au Maroc, le Makhzen, dirigé par les souverains Moulaye Abdel Hafid et Moulaye Abdel Aziz qui n’ont pas l’envergure de Moulaye Hassan 1er, s’enfoncait inexorablement dans la nuit du protectorat. Le Royaume avait cependant des armes et des munitions que Ma El Aïnin ne tardera pas à obtenir pour les résistants maures. Mais en 1909, 1’Adrar, le dernier bastion mauritanien de la résistance anti-impérialiste, s’effondre. Le Sahara est menacé. La France est à Atar. Le souverain Moulaye Hafid comme son prédécesseur Moulaye Abdel Aziz refuse de fournir des armes aux résistants et signe des traités avec les Français. C’est en ce moment précis que Ma El Aïnin entre en lice. L’action diplomatique qui consistait à opposer les puissances colonisatrices les unes aux autres et notamment la France à l’Allemagne dans la région ne suffisait plus. A la tête d’une armée, il décide d’aller destituer Moulaye Hafiz, le roi du Maroc traître selon lui à la cause de l’Islam. Mais il est repoussé en juin 1910 par les troupes françaises du Général Moinier dans la plaine de Tadla. Il revient à Tiznitt où il meurt le 28 octobre 1910. Son fils El Heyba reprend la lutte en 1912. Il occupe Marrakech avant d’être repoussé et battu par le Colonel Mangin le 6 septembre 1912. C’est déjà la fin de la résistance ma el aïninienne.
