Les Mandé-Sud en Afrique occidentale

The Mandé constitute an important linguistic family judging from the number of ethnic groups that make it up and from the size of the population. The most known and most numerous groups are found on the western side on West Africa : Bambara Malinké, Susu, Mendé, Toma, Guerzé. Besides, small groups of the mandé are found in different parts of Guinea and of Liberia and as far as the town of Boussa in Nigeria. They make up a group known as mandé-sud, and their languages are very closely related : mana, dá, Wë, Guro, Gagu, Mwá, Nwá, Be, Samo, Bisa, Busa or Boko. Two hypotheses are possible : the 1st supposes a west to east migration which might have started form the present settlement of the Bambara-Malinké, thus assuming that the latter were the centre of the dispersion of the Mandé ; the second one supposes that the Mandé were driven back mainly by the voltaic people, and during their retreat some groups might have been enclaved, as shown by I cattered mandé settlements which date form an ancient period.Les Mandé constituent une famille linguistique importante tant par le total des ressortissants que par le nombre des ethnies qui la composent. Les groupes les plus connus et les plus nombreux se trouvent à l’ouest de l’Afrique occidentale : Bambara-Malinké, Susu, Mendé-Toma-Guerzé. Mais un chapelet de peuples mandé apparaît partant de la Guinée et du Libéria jusqu’à la ville de Boussa au Nigéria. Ils forment le groupe mandé-sud et leurs langues sont étroitement apparentées : Mana, Dà, Wë, Guro, Gagu, Mwâ, Nwâ, Bë, Samo, Bisa, Busa ou Boko. Deux hypothèses sont a priori possibles : une migration d’ouest en est à partir de l’habitat actuel du groupe Bambara-Malinké en supposant celui-ci comme le centre de formation et de dispersion des Mandé. Ou bien un refoulement des Mandé d’est en ouest, principalement dû à des Voltaïques, refoulement au cours duquel certaines fractions seraient restées enclavées comme autant d’ilots-témoins de l’habitat mandé à une époque ancienne.
