The history of the Ostrea (Turkostrea) multicostata group goes back to the Paleocene and its north african origin seems established now. The most ancient forms of the group, O. (T.) multicostata multicostata and O. (T.) multicostata strictiplicata, were found in the southern confines of Tunisia and Algeria where they manifested themselves simultaneously. In a later Paleocene time, the former produced O. (T.) reili reili and, in the middle Eocene, O. (T.) multicostata strictiplicata was modified in central Tethys to produce a type with a gryphoid umbo, O. (T.) turkestanensis whereas in Africa a second lateral offshoot was separated from it, O.
