The relies of a remarkable surface topping the Provence reliefs, have for a long time been ascribed to a Miocene erosion system. Actually, an Eo-Oligocene erosion is suggested. It was probably mainly bio-chimical in nature for the main part, and was suddendly interrupted ad the Sannoisian-Stampian limit by the Stampian marine transgression. This surface occurs not only in Provence, but throughout Western Europe. It has been relatively well preserved during Miocene and Pliocene times, up to the Quaternary.
