The pre-Islamic eastern Mediterranean world had many forms of paganism, rooted in local tradition and co-existing with Jewish and Christian monotheism. Paganism could sometimes manifest itself through a hierarchy of gods, in which a single supreme deity might suggest a kind of pagan monotheism. Yet all pagans worshipped more than one god, although they nowhere constituted a coherent social unit. In the Qur’ān Muhammad alludes to mushrikūn (cultsharers), who are normally taken to be pagans, although this view has recently been challenged.
