Distribution of Individual Wages, Education and Development : Taiwan (1979-1994) This paper studies the mechanisms underlying the apparent stability of the individual wage income distribution in Taiwan. An original decomposition methodology based on micro-simulation techniques is proposed. Applied to the distribution of income in Taiwan since 1979 it permits isolating the respective impact of changes in : a) the earning structure ; b) labor-force participation behavior ; and c) the sociodemographic structure of the population, with special emphasis on education. It appears that the stability of the distribution of wages in Taiwan is the result of various structural forces which happened to offset each other. In particular, we find that the strong unequalizing effect of rising returns to education has been offset by changes in the educational structure, which had a clear equalizing impact on the distribution of individual wage income.Cet article propose un cadre d'analyse général pour l'étude empirique du lien entre l'expansion de l'éducation et la distribution des salaires dans un pays en développement. Cette méthodologie par microsimulations isole l'impact respectif sur la distribution des revenus de l'évolution de la structure socio-démographique de la population (et tout particulièrement de l'éducation), de l'évolution des comportements d'offre de travail et de la modification de la structure de rémunération. Nous montrons que la combinaison de profonds changements structurels qui ont pris place à Taiwan sur la période étudiée a résulté en une apparente stabilité de la distribution des salaires. En particulier, l'effet fortement inégalitaire de l'augmentation des rendements de l'éducation a été compensé par la modification de la structure de l'éducation dont l'effet a été nettement égalisateur.Bourguignon François, Fournier Martin, Gurgand Marc.
