Social Consequences of Economie Reform in China : An Analysis of Regional Disparity in the Transition Period This paper uses provincial level time-series data to study the disparities in regional economic growth and income distribution. It is found that the regional income disparities in China have been more serious than the regional growth disparities since 1978. The worsening of regional income disparities were caused mainly by the growing gaps among the East, Central and Western regions. It is also found that the disparities in regional income and growth arose mainly from the difference in each region's ability to capitalize on the emerging market and development opportunities in the transition to a market economy.L'objet de cet articl...
