In the absence of intertemporal markets, one way to reduce risk for rural households is to allocate their labour force in order to diversify their sources of income. In this paper we look at migration as a family decision of risk-sharing. The theoretical model is based on the maximisation of a joint utility function under a budget constraint which depends on the decision taken. To assess its relevance, an empirical version of this dichotomous model is estimated.
