Before the end of December 1997, the Cahiers d'Outre-Mer will celebrate its Fiftieth Anniversary. Launched in 1948 by Louis Papy and Eugene Revert, both professors at Bordeaux University, the journal progressively abandoned the Mediterranean world, on which it had in part concentrated. It quickly extented its sphere of interest far beyond the limited field of South Atlantic countries -its initial primary objective -to encompass all the tropical countries. At present, it is the only French geography journal that is completely devoted to them.
