The earliest archaeological remains excavated at the western foothill of Oylum Höyük, near the Qoueiq river headwaters, consist of the remains of a huge stone platform with a backfill full of Ubaid-related pottery. The following layers yielded a stratigraphically ordered sequence with ceramic assemblages characterized by chaff-tempered, coarse ware with scraped or brushed surfaces, which finds close parallels in Arslantepe VIII. This material is found in conjunction with a few stamp seals, beads and other materials that tie in with other Chalcolithic assemblages.
