Kaolinite is widely distributed in Coal Measures Sediments in the Pennine Basin. The clay variation, through two major marine bands, involves an upwards decrease in the proportion of kaolinite, and is attributed to the decreased importance with time of a mature proximal source. An association between mature, kaolinitic palaeosols and marine incursions is suggested. The clay mineralogy of the seatearths is also observed in the low-temperature plasma ashes of coal seams. If the ash content is low (<2%) well crystallised diagenetic kaolinite is dominant.
