Behavior and structure of clay pastes. Role of dehydration-rehydration cycles The water adsorption to very high activities has to be studied considering the different levels of organization of the solid : the elementary sheet, the crystallites, the particles (aggregates of cristallites) and the assemblies of particles ; the macroporosity also plays an outstanding role. Hydration under controlled water activity can be studied using membrane presses for high activities (>0,98), using ultrafiltration devices for lower activities. Plotting the volume variation as a function of the water content leads to the shrinkage curve : the poral volume and the hydric stress at air penetration point depend on the nature of the clay.
