Ardenne — Brabant — The Ardenne and Brabant areas exhibit spotty outcrops of a complete Paleozoic sedimentary record that is fossiliferous from Lower Cambrian to Westphalian D. The predevonian series is a basement relative to the unconformable Devono-Carboniferous cover. The former was tectonically deformed in greenschist conditions or less severe. The latter belongs to the southern margin of the "Old Red Sandstones Continent". As a whole, they accommodated the variscan crustal extension and subsequent shortening.
