The importance of duration of sea-water circulation for the low-temperature alteration of the oceanic crust has been often shown. In case of palagonitization of tholeiitic glasses, they are morphological and mineralogical evolutions to the disappearing of fresh glass and the formation of clay minerals and phillipsites. Chemically, they are an hydration, an oxidation, a gain in potassium and losses for silica, alumina, magnesium and calcium. A part of those is used for the phillipsite formation. The sodium budget is a function of evolution stage.
