Hydrothermal alteration of submarine basalts : from zeolitic to spilitic facies in the upper Triassic pillow-lavas of Antalya, Turkey

The upper Triassic alkalic basalts of the Alakir Çay valley (Antalya nappes, Turkey) have been hydrothermally metamorphosed under the zeolite facies conditions. Two of these submarine volcanic massifs, mainly made of pillow-lavas flows, offer good field sections over more than 650 m thick. In the Çalbali Dag massif, the zeolite and associated minerals have been analyzed inside and outside the pillow-lavas (inter-pillow matrix), from bottom to top of the volcanic pile. Natrolite, gonnardite, thomsonite, analcite, gmelinite, stilbite, heulandite and laumontite have been determined, associated with calcite, K-feldspar, celadonite, smectites and chlorite. No evolution of the zeolite assemblages with depth has been detected : this fact implies a rather smooth thermal gradient in the volcanic pile during the hydrothermal circulation. In the Sayrun massif , the same widespread development of zeolites, calcite and smectite is observed, with the addition of true albite-chlorite spilitic paragenesis, well developed in some areas. The reality of a progressive transition from zeolitic assemblages to spilitic ones is an important conclusion of this study.Les basaltes alcalins du Trias supérieur affleurant dans la vallée de l'Alakir Çay (nappes d'Antalya, Turquie) ont subi un métamorphisme hydrothermal dans le faciès zéoiite . Deux de ces massifs volcaniques sous-marins, essentiellement formés de coulées à pillow-lavas, offrent d'excellentes coupes de terrain sur plus de 650 m d'épaisseur. Dans le massif du Çalbali Dag, les zéoliteset minéraux associés ont été analysés, dans les pillows et dans la matrice inter-pillows, de la base au sommet de la pile volcanique. Les zéolites suivantes ont été déterminées : natrolite, gonnardite, thomsonite, analcime, gmélinite, stilbite, heulandite et laumontite, associées à la calcite, un feldspath potassique de basse température, la céladonite, les smectites et la chlorite. 11 n'y a pas d'évolution des associations zéolitiques avec la profondeur, ce qui implique un gradient thermique modéré dans la pile volcanique pendant la circulation hydrothermale. Dans le massif de Sayrun, les mêmes associations ont été observées, avec en plus le développement de paragenèses franchement spilitiques dans certains secteurs. La réalité d'une transition progressive des assemblages zéolitiques aux assemblages spilitiques est une conclusion importante de cette étude.Malley Patrick, Juteau Thierry, Blanco-Sanchez José-Antonio.
