The main purpose of the paper is to reveal the rationale behind selection of the government debt evaluation methods based on the concept of sustainability of the debt. Methods. The main research methods used are systematization and generalization of the scientific literature, quantitative and qualitative analysis of the primary and secondary data, scenario method. Results. Specific different concepts of sustainability of the government debt are defined. The rationale and arguments of the selection of the government debt evaluation methods are provided.
