Elisabeth Szilágyi of Horogszeg was the renowned dowager of the Kingdom of Hungary in the 15th century. She is considered to be one of the most famous women in the history of Hungary. Still, her life, apart from certain periods, is mostly unknown in front of the widespread public. During the 19th and 20th century, in the Hungarian historiography Elisabeth was portrayed as a less important, subsidiary character, and no one has written a biographical monograph about her based on historical documents to this day. However, in the year 2018 we celebrate the 560th anniversary of the election of King Matthias I of Hungary.
