A subordinate masculine : A study of the character of Adi in Tetangga Masa Gitu situation comedy

Gender is one of social matters in our life. Through gender perspective, society is divided into two, namely masculine and feminine. Masculine is identified with men and feminineis identified with women. Based on gender roles, masculine is characterized with strong, dominant and rational; while feminine is inferior, irrational, and weak. In household life, the different roles between masculine and feminine also occur. However, in this modern era, that sense has changed. Men are also not in accordance with the role of hegemony masculinity but subordinate masculinity. The subordinate masculinity can be noted in the figure of Adi in a situation comedy entitled Tetangga Mitu Gitu on Net TV. The family life of Adi and Angel depicts the figure of Adi who does not fulfill his obligations as a man in accordance with the role of traditional masculinity. The purpose of this study is to examine the subordinate masculinity of Adi's character in Tetangga Masa Gitu situation commedy. This research applies Fiske's television culture and uses 7 episodes of Tetangga Masa GItu as primary data. Adi’s characters of masculinity in the scene are analyzed using Beauvoir’s masculinity traits and Connel’s theory of masculinity. This study finds that Adi's male figure in household life is subordinate masculinity he does not fulfill his responsibilities as a man, and he often like a woman who cry and irrational but still want to admit his masculity because his body shape
