Evaluation of depressive symptoms and sleep quality in elderly nursing home residents and day care visitors

In this master thesis, the rates of depressive symptoms and sleep quality in elderly nursing home residents and day care visitors are analyzed. Anonymous questionnaire of three parts was applied: sociodemographic and anamnesis questionnaire, geriatric depression scale and Pitsburgh sleep quality index questionnaire. Research participants - Nursing home residents of VšĮ Kauno Panemunės socialinės globos namai and BĮ Kauno kartų namų Senelių globos padalinys; day care visitors of VšĮ Kauno Panemunės socialinės globos namų Socialinės priežiūros dienos centras, Dienos socialinės globos centras and BĮ Kauno kartų namų Pagyvenusių žmonių dienos centras; all of whom were 60 years or older in age. Study showed that three quarters of elderly nursing home residents and a third of day care visitors showed signs of depression; 9 out of 10 elderly nursing home residents and a half of day care visitors had sleep disturbances. Elderly nursing home residents significantly more often were found to have depressive symptoms, poor sleep quality and longer sleep onset latency
