Finger trauma and its treatment tactics of preschool and school aged children in LUHSH KC in year 2016 – 2017

Aim of the study: To assess and compare the most common trauma of preschool and school aged children hand fingers and their treatment tactics. Objectives: 1. Assessment and comparison of hand finger traumas between preschool and school aged children. 2. Comparison of most commonly chosen treatment tactics for children hand finger trauma in LUHSH KC. 3. Comparison of preschool children boys and girls hand finger traumas. 4. Comparison of school aged children boys and girls hand finger traumas. Methods: A retrospective study was planned in LUHSH KC Children Surgery Clinic, Orthopedic Traumatology section. A permission to perform the study was obtained from LUHS Bioethics center and a protocol was prepared. Data was gathered from LSUHS KC databases patient’s case histories. Participants of the study: 101 patients of LUHSH KC Children Surgery Clinic, Orthopedic Traumatology section, aged from 1 to 17 years old. Results: It was determined that proximal and distal phalanx fractures more commonly occur in school aged children, while preschool children suffer more one finger amputations (p<0,05). It was determined that school aged girls most commonly injure their fifth finger while boys tend to injure third, fourth and fifth fingers (p<0,05). Preschool boys most commonly injured fourth, second and fifth fingers while preschool girls injured fifth finger (p<0,05). Conclusions: 1. Most common preschool and school aged children finger traumas treated in LUHSH KC were distal and proximal phalanx fractures and one finger traumatic amputations. Preschool children mostly endured distal phalanx fractures and traumatic amputations of one finger. School aged children mostly sustained proximal and distal phalanx fractures p<0,05. 2. Children treated in LHUSH KC treatment tactics did not statistically differ according to age nor injury. 3. Preschool girls mostly injured fifth finger while boys injured fourth finger according to LUHSH KC p<0,05 4. School aged girls mostly injured fifth and first fingers while boys injured fourth, third and fifth fingers according to LUHSH KC – p
